Missing Link Transformers seeks to reinvigorate the original forms of the Transformers, and now Diaclone Car Robot, molds with modern articulation. The original mold for Sunstreaker has been lost for decades, so the replication of this design is very important to G1 Transformers collectors. Additionally, details that were once only displayed by stickers are now molded into the figure itself. The addition of pilot figures is new to the Missing Link line, as well, reminiscent of Diaclone’s Dia-Naut pilots, with Sunstreaker’s designed to resemble a Human Worker that bears a resemblance to Spike Witwicky from the Sunbow Transformers cartoon of the 1980s. Cordon’s partner is from the same mold, but given colors to suit a Police Officer.
Cordon, in this form, has never seen a Transformers release. It was originally Diaclone Car Robot No. 3 Countach LP500S Patrol Car Type, from the Diaclone toyline, which was the forerunner of Transformers, before the toys were licensed by Hasbro in the 1980s. Cordon was eventually brought into Transformers in 2018 as a Masterpiece Transformers figure MP-42 and then later again as a Generations Selects figure in 2020, using the Masterpiece MP-39 Sunstreaker and Earthrise Sunstreaker molds, respectively. This will be the first time that Cordon is available as a Transformer in his original Diaclone form, with the added articulation of Missing Link to sweeten the deal.
Adding to the importance of this figure, the original Sunstreaker mold from Diaclone was the first realistic car-to robot converting toy designed, brought to reality by Kohjin Ohno. Originally available in red as the Diaclone No. 1 LP500S Super-Tuning Type in Japan, and as Diakron DK-1 in North America, it was recolored with a light bar added to create the Patrol Car Type now known as Cordon. When Hasbro licensed the Diaclone and Microman figures from Takara in the 1980s to create Transformers, they changed the Diaclone figure’s color from red to yellow, creating Sunstreaker. Perhaps we have another in red on the way, which is now known in Transformers as Spin-Out. Only time will tell.
